This is the story of the Sport in Education Project; an approach adopted by a group of New Zealand secondary schools to contribute to improved academic, social and sporting outcomes for schools and students by using sport as a context for learning and student engagement. Sport in Education is about creating powerful learning environments through combining sport as an engaging context, and effective teaching pedagogies found in physical education. An emphasis of the project has been on using cross-curricular approaches - theme based units of work, planned and delivered collaboratively by cross-curricular teaching teams, and using integrated assessment tasks.

Gamification is not a branch of gaming. It is not a type of video game, nor is it the use of video games in the classroom. Gamification is the concept of applying game mechanics and game design techniques in non-game contexts; to motivate participation, engagement and loyalty. No longer can education be viewed as a mundane process for providing information while assessing for retention and understanding. The future focused educator has the challenge of engaging students, stimulating their interests, retaining their attention, and developing actively involved, lifelong learners. As teachers, gamification allows us to maximise student enjoyment and engagement in the classroom by capturing the interest of learners and inspiring them to continue learning. Throughout this session Carl will describe successful real world examples of gamification, explore educational applications of gamification, and discuss some of the challenges and successes Carl has had in his classes using gamification. The session will conclude with a mini workshop where you explore a range of game mechanics and attempt to implement them in different topics or units of work from the Health and Physical Education learning area.

What did others say about last year's online conference

I got valuable ideas and practical applications I can use immediately in my own practice and also look to implement across the school.

A lot of information from many different perspectives, different ideas, and love the interaction. Thanks!

It was easy to access. Content was INCREDIBLE. Speakers were well prepared, easy to listen to, and had so much to share. I could NOT believe it was FREE. The learning I obtained was SO VALUABLE to me. I am so grateful for the FREE learning opportunity I had.

The variety of topics and quality of presenters was fantastic. So many wonderful ideas that can be implemented instantly into a classroom and then other ideas to consider for future planning.
